About US – Divisions

The St. Augustine Police Department is organized into specialized divisions that support both the needs of the community and the professional development of its officers.

Each division plays a unique role in preventing crime, improving response times, enhancing public safety, and delivering specialized services throughout the city.

Working together, these divisions provide a coordinated approach to policing that emphasizes visibility, accountability, and community engagement while ensuring the right resources are available for everything from routine calls for service to complex investigations and traffic safety.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the department’s largest and most visible division, serving as the primary connection between law enforcement and the community.

Patrol officers respond to a wide range of calls for service, including emergencies, crimes in progress, traffic crashes, and quality-of-life concerns. They also work proactively to prevent crime by conducting traffic enforcement, investigating suspicious activity, and maintaining a visible presence throughout neighborhoods and business districts.

As first responders, patrol officers stabilize incidents, provide immediate assistance, gather critical information, and determine the appropriate next steps before specialized units become involved.

Through daily interaction with the community, proactive policing, and problem-solving, the Patrol Division plays a vital role in protecting public safety, building trust, and supporting the department’s mission.

Investigations Division

The Investigations Division handles cases that require additional time, specialized expertise, and detailed analysis.

Staffed by experienced officers selected from within the department, detectives investigate complex crimes, unresolved cases, and incidents that involve extensive evidence collection.

Using advanced investigative technology, intelligence databases, and strong partnerships with neighboring agencies, detectives follow leads, identify key evidence, and work diligently to bring cases to a successful resolution.

Downtown Division

The Downtown Division serves the heart of historic St. Augustine, one of the city’s busiest areas for both residents and visitors.

Officers patrol on foot and by bicycle, maintaining a highly visible presence throughout the historic district. They focus on preserving quality of life, strengthening community relationships, supporting outreach efforts, and responding quickly in an area known for narrow streets, heavy pedestrian traffic, and crowded public spaces.

Their mobility and accessibility allow them to provide effective service while building positive connections with the people they serve.

Traffic Division

The Traffic Division is dedicated to improving roadway safety through crash response, traffic enforcement, and detailed crash investigations.

Officers patrol in marked vehicles and on motorcycles, providing both high visibility and rapid response throughout the city.

When they are not responding to traffic crashes, officers investigate hit-and-run cases and conduct proactive traffic enforcement. From addressing everyday traffic violations to targeting reckless and impaired drivers, the Traffic Division plays an essential role in reducing crashes and keeping St. Augustine’s roadways safe.
